We are pleased that you are considering marriage at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, and in full accordance with the policies of the Diocese of Newark, we offer same sex couples recognition and access to all sacraments, including marriage.

The Christian church views marriage as a symbol and an expression of how people can live in a loving relationship together. We want people not just to be “married”, but to be part of a joyous and growing experience of love, mutual support and encouragement. Thus, it is that a relationship to the parish community and pre-marital consultation are considered to be integral steps in Christian marriage. The priests officiates and solemnizes the marriage in the name of Christ, and on behalf of God’s Church. As a marriage is part of the life of the Christian community, the wedding service takes place in the church. Only under extraordinary circumstances is a service performed elsewhere.

Procedures
As an Episcopal parish in the diocese of Newark, weddings at St. Gregory’s are carried out in accordance with the directions put forth in the constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church, USA, and the diocese of Newark. Those directions include the following:

Expectations of any couple, member and non-member, are these:

The couple has undergone an appropriate pre-marital counseling series by the Rector or an agreed upon substitute. Normally four sessions are held. If either of the couple has been married twice or more already, an outside counselor is required for the series. Divorce documents must be presented at the first meeting with the Rector if that has occurred. Permission by the Bishop for remarriage is required but the process is completed usually within 30 days.
Ceremonial aspects, floral arrangements, and musical selections are all subject to the approval of the Rector.

Financial Expectations

For the Clergy: There is no fee for communicants (one, or both parties are members of St. Gregory’s). (An honorarium at least equal to the Music Directory fee is customary). For non-communicants: A standard fee of $500 is customary
For the Church: Communicants have no fee, but non-communicants fee is $500.
Services of the Organist: $125 for service and $25 for the rehearsal
For Soloist or Instrumentalist: Arrangements are mad directly through the Music Directory
Services of the Sexton: $100 minimum.
Please discuss any questions about your financial expectations during the preparations with clergy or contact the parish office.

Please make out one check to “St. Gregory’s Church” for the total amount due for proper distribution. Checks are due one week before the service.

Financial contributions to the church and Rector are used to fund various ministries of this church.

Please note: the Church is not ‘rented out’ for weddings or receptions. A wedding taking place at St. Gregory’s does not entitle the use of the classrooms or other rooms in the building. If you anticipate needing a room, please notify the Vicar so arrangements can be made.
